After 11 weeks at eGain, they let me go. Now some people
might feel discouraged. I felt like it was an opportunity
– I made a sandwich board, copied 1000 resumes and decided
to head to Pac Bell Park in San Francisco for a weekday Giants
game. More importantly, I pitched the story to the three best
media outlets. As a result, I received two hits – one
of which was the Business Section front page of the San Jose
Mercury News. This was a major coup and good source for job
leads.

One of my jobs was to write press releases to announce
company news. This is an example from when former SBC CFO
Don Kiernan joined the Seagate board in April 2003. I worked
with Don directly to get information and receive approvals
for the rewrite to his biography and the press release. The
company also used this information in an SEC filing. Lastly,
I worked with him to receive a photo to fulfill press requests
from the various countries in which we operate.

I am part of the Seagate team that tells the Seagate story.
In 2002, I worked to tell the story of our corporate customer
portal. We pitched the story to select media outlets. As a
result, we received positive clips that supported the overall
Seagate story. B2B portal – is this really newsworthy?
Well, the story got better after we completed our primary
pitch – we booked over $1 billion in the first six months
of operation or close to 30% of our overall revenue.

I am a big believer in the power of the Web as a PR tool.
With not much time to write and file stories, journalists
need reliable information to file better stories. For example,
we found that some journalists used our web site to fact check
seemingly-trivial items like warranty information. At Seagate,
my team and I are making constant progress to rework the About
Seagate section and the news room. We’re using usability
studies and redesign tactics to deliver a better product that
not only makes life easier for our Product PR team, but results
in better press clips.
